After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Geiseltal, a central coal mining area of the GDR, was renaturised and flooded and became the largest artificial lake in Germany.

The Film evolves around different parallel worlds within the former open-cast mine. While retired miners diligently work on building a recreational area, ornithologists yearn for the arrival of a rare
migratory bird from Africa. Meanwhile, asylum applicants waiting for their right of residence or that their families can join them remains in vain.
